Hon. Richard E. Gardiner (Ret.)
A retired judge of the Fairfax Circuit Court (December 2024), having been appointed by the General Assembly in 2017 after a temporary appointment by the Governor in 2016. Prior to his service on the Circuit Court, Judge Gardiner served on the Fairfax County General District Court from 2013 to 2016. Before going on the bench, he was engaged in private practice; based in Fairfax, he focused on criminal defense, civil litigation, and administrative law in Virginia trial and appellate courts and in numerous federal trial and appellate courts around the country.
Judge Gardiner graduated from what is now the Antonin Scalia Law School of George Mason University following service in the United States Naval Reserve. He received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Union College (Schenectady, NY).
On the Fairfax Circuit Court, Judge Gardiner presided over a jury trial which resulted in the largest civil jury verdict in Virginia history. Judge Gardiner has participated in numerous CLE panels.
