Judge William H. Shaw, III, Ret.


Judge Shaw retired after serving eleven years as a Circuit Court Judge in the 9th Judicial Circuit of Virginia, primarily in Gloucester, Mathews, and Middlesex Counties.  During his tenure he served a term as Chief Judge in the Circuit.


Following his graduation from the University of Virginia School of Law, he served as Law Clerk to the Honorable Ted Dalton, Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia.  Judge Shaw (Ret.) began a general practice of law in Gloucester County in 1972 as an associate with Pointer & Field, then as a partner in Dolph & Shaw, and subsequently as a sole practitioner.  From 1980 until 1994, he was also Commonwealth’s Attorney of Gloucester County.


In 1994 he was selected as a Judge of the 9th Judicial District, followed by his selection to the Circuit Court.  During his service on the Circuit Court bench, he presided over numerous domestic relations, real estate, riparian, will and trust, contract, and tort cases.

For over ten years, Judge Shaw has been an adjunct Professor of Law at the College of William and Mary School of Law.


Judge Shaw (Ret.) will provide all types of mediation and alternate dispute resolution services in Tidewater and Central Virginia.
